Drift loading is the load owners never anticipate

Fresh snowfall depth is not the design case. Drift is. Once a glazed perimeter exists, wind-driven snow that used to pass through the pergola instead banks against it, and against the corner where the pergola meets a wall or a hedge line. That accumulation can exceed the loading anyone assumed when the structure was built, and it acts sideways on the panels and the track as well as downwards on the frame.

This is why the layout matters. Where the run stacks, which face is left operable, and whether a bay is kept clear for access after a storm are all decisions made against the prevailing pattern on your specific site — not from a standard drawing.

Freeze-thaw, meltwater and keeping a mountain run working
